dc.description.abstract Floods are considered to be one of the most destructive natural hazards on earth. Floods are responsible for millions of human lives, billions of dollars loss to the economy and climate deterioration. Jhelum river is one of the eastern tributaries of Indus River. Jhelum encountered a disastrous flood in 1992. Based on the hydrographic data obtained for 1992 flood, 1D simulations are performed using BASEMENT. BASEMENT works under the principles of 1D Saint venant equations. This study includes the one dimensional study of the flow in Jhelum i.e. longitudinal flow. From the site conditions being studied the roughness and manning coefficient will be determined and the study will be conducted in BASEMENT using QGIS for pre and post processing. One dimensional study is chosen as the depth to width ratio in the tributary is not considerable, nor the slope is incredible. So the longitudinal flow study will constitute most of the flow characteristics. From the longitudinal profiles extracted, using Basement, breaching in Jhelum stream and future projections of floods can be predicted. According to our simulations, the flood in the areas of PD khan, Tehsil Jhelum, Khushab and Sargodha are justified. en_US
