Most Web search engines are commercial ventures supported by advertising revenue
and, as a result, some employ the controversial practice of allowing advertisers to pay
money to have their listings ranked higher in search results. Those search engines
which do not accept money for their search engine results make money by running
search related ads alongside the regular search engine results. The search engines
make money every time someone clicks on one of these ads.
Majority of the search engines at present show result matches for a search
numbering in hundreds and thousands. Say if one million results meet a requirement
then is again a worthwhile effort to locate ones own interest. This is a situation where
the user has to open the web links one by one and search for their specific document
while going through numerous web sites. Information in access is at times bad. Users
need a result set which is closest to their specific needs.
One of the challenges in web searching and creating a result set involves
challenging task of page ranking. Page Ranking is a process by which every web page
is assigned a page ranking or weight. The rank of a page is decided/calculated by
factors like relevancy of the text on the page with the query, number of matches in a
page for a query and proximity of the query words in a page. Even after all these
calculations ranking is very difficult without human intervention. |
