Despite the construction industry in Pakistan being heavily labour intensive -- due to the cheap cost of labour itself -- the workmanship found in the industry is of a low standard, and skilled labour, who have received professional training, are hard to come by. This leads to delays in projects and compromises in quality.
The drilled shafts currently being constructed all over Pakistan eventually become victims to this delay and compromise in quality, and the recently completed foundation at the Peshawar Morr interchange is no exception, with the project taking thrice as long to complete as originally planned.
The driven pile system is common all across Europe and the USA, and the purpose of this project is to assess the the impact, if any, driven piles would have on the local construction industry if the practice is taken up.
It is hoped that the introduction of driven piles will not only reduce project durations, it will also make the whole process less labour intensive, leading to a lower cost of construction and improved quality.
To highlight the aforementioned improvements due to the driven piling system, a redesign of the existing drilled shafts will be carried out, accompanied by a cost and time analysis. |
