Abstract:
Download managers have become a popular way of downloading content from the internet. These download managers are software applications or apps which provide fast and secure downloads. But not all apps are trustworthy. They may depict themselves as malware such as viruses or spyware. Most malware may collect device information without authorization and make system changes without the knowledge or consent of the user. This thesis presents the validation and malware analysis of popular download managers currently available for Microsoft Windows 10 platform. The download managers’ sources are Microsoft Store, and free third-party websites. The results, gathered through the use of different forensic tools, help to assess whether the download managers possess malicious intent and the level of their trustworthiness. All download managers have been categorically arranged after analysis. At the end, all results obtained through analysis have been examined and categorized with respect to NIST privacy framework which is a tool for enhancing privacy through risk management.
