Abstract:
Odor detector is an electronic device consisting of an array of chemical odor sensors with post-processing on the acquired data for automatic detection of specific compounds and mixtures. Odor detectors find numerous applications including detection and quantification of pollutants in ecology; explosives and drug detection in the field of security; detailed analysis of fermentation and ripening of edibles in the area of food processing and diagnosis of fatal diseases in medicine science. The demand for more objective analytical methods, along with the discovery of materials with chemo-electronic properties, has boosted the development of sensor-based machine olfaction potentially imitating the biological system. In this project, we have developed a sensing array targeting some common chemicals (acetone, benzene, alcohol). The data acquired by the array are then processed using simple algorithms for the purposes of detection and quantification of these chemicals.
The main modules of the project are:
Development of sensor array from COTS individual chemical sensors
Preparation of chemical samples and data acquisition
Development of detection algorithms based on signal processing for automated odor detection
Validation on real data sets and quantification of detection algorithm
