dc.description.abstract In today’s environmentally conscious climate there is more and more interest being taken in alternative forms of power supply. The purpose of this project is to investigate the feasibility of implementing a mobile phone charging system, to be used by anybody, which is powered by energy generated from solar panels that may be small enough to carry around like a normal electricity based charger. With fuel hikes making news, solar energy is the most sought after energy source. Solar chargers are simple, portable and ready to use devices which can be used by anyone especially in remote areas. Going solar can solve more than one problems, right from cutting down on carbon emissions and dependence on fuels, to solving the energy crisis. This project involves integrating a small scale mobile phone charging system which is powered via a solar panel and capable of charging a cell phone battery. The project also required research in to different solar panels and charging technologies available for the small scale system being designed, keeping in regard the charging time of a given battery. The output power given by the charger is 5 kWh and it takes 2-3 hours to charge a smartphone using our Portable Solar Charger based on our calculations making its power conversion efficiency quite greater than those available today. en_US
