Abstract:
The rapid advancement in technology, over the past decade has led us to a digitized world, seen as a global village and the distanced are removed. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that consists of 24 orbiting satellites. Data send from the satellites is used to trace the location (by triangulation) and even 3-D position (latitudes, longitudes etc.). GPS modernization is leading to addition of new navigation signals to the satellite constellation where three new signals designed for civilian use: L2C, L5, and L1C are mainly focused. L-5 signal is considered more reliable in accuracy because of its enhanced-signal structure and wider bandwidth. The project includes software based simulation and acquisition of L5 GPS signals, also called signals of life (SOL). The first step is to design a transmitter of GP L5 signals. Preceding the transmitter, the agenda includes the acquiring of L-5 signal transmitted data and processed by the receiver units, the signal is feed to an LMS filter for efficient noise removal and finally the required data is retrieved. The algorithms designed will be used to extract the required information (tracking) from the signal. The results would be displayed via GUI. All the components would be manually designed for the L-5 frequency, which is 1176.45 MHz.
