Android Application for Autism

Abstract

An android application for children with Autism is to help them communicate with others. Autism is known as a complex developmental condition. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting development of the person's communication and social interaction skills. The application constructs grammatically correct English sentence from the pictures selected by the user. There are various pictures saved in a database according to categories such as appliances, food, emotions, games etc. Each picture is saved along with its metadata which includes picture name, category and part of speech (POS). The POS indicates whether it is a noun, second person pronoun, verb or adjective. When a user selects a picture, the resultant sentence is constructed according to the POS of the picture and following the basic structure of the English grammar. The user can also add more pictures of his choice and delete or edit already present pictures. For adding the user must select a picture from the gallery and provide the relevant information which includes name, part of speech and category. The user can also delete or edit any picture, this could be done just by selecting the desired picture. User can also change the settings of the application. The options include mute/unmute for sound, change level (Beginner or Expert), change picture size from the provided three options (small, medium, large), change font size (small, medium, large) and change background from the provided backgrounds option.
