Kinect Based Enhancement of Cognitive Abilities

Abstract

Cognitive Disability is a condition that results in intellectual functioning significantly below average and is associated with concurrent deficits in adaptive behavior that require special education and related services. Students with cognitive disabilities often are unable to read or to gain meaning from standard print materials. They may struggle with reading due to difficulties with functional abilities such as problem-solving, memory, attention, and comprehension. They often need and can benefit from the use of accessible instructional materials to present the same information found in traditional instructional materials in a different format. Specialized formats may be essential to these students in allowing them to access and achieve in the general curriculum. The application is designed for children with neurological difficulties and contains and interactive and efficient menu system. It includes five different exercises for the patients that will improve their cognitive abilities and on the basis of that the evaluation of their mental improvement will be made. The application uses Kinect sensor to track skeletal scan and distance of the patient from the sensor. The user (doctor) logs into the application by providing the required information for login. After doctor selects an exercise for the patient he/she exercise performs exercise and answers of the given questions in the exercise will be recorded. Patient will perform exercise mainly by the movement of his hands. Every answer of the patient will be recorded in the database. After the patient is done exercising his daily progress is recorded and on the basis of his performance the doctor remarks his remarks and decides the path for further treatment.
