Tourist companion Android Based Application

Abstract

In this modern era, smart phones like iPhone, Android etc. are increasing day by day and so are the applications for these smart phones. Android is one of the most popular operating system for smart phones these days. Android has a dedicated market where developers can upload apps and users can download as per the requirements and interest. Android based tourist apps help user perform different tourist activities while staying on tour, like tracking one’s flights, flight status, weather updates, help in finding hotels, restaurants and markets. Some applications even translate foreign languages to facilitate tourist in foreign countries. Now days there are few applications which even search for flight tickets, hotels and local rental cars. Applications like Google goggles, uses visuals recognition techniques to recognize objects and return relevant search results. These applications are meant for tourists and business travelers. Having an Android phone on a trip can make everything a bit easier as one’s whole trip can be tracked and organized with simplicity and efficiently. Such applications are way better than to carry around a bundle of print-outs and maps. In this project we will be using different technologies and services like Google Maps on top of our app. We will create an app that can be used by tourists to navigate new cities and organize their stay. This application will be unique from the already existing ones as this would be like a self- aware service, guiding, alerting and interacting with the user. It would be an intelligent application which will give options which suit best to the user. For instance, if a user is in a new city and wants to go to a restaurant, the user will type in “restaurant”. The application will use different apps to collect and calculate the information. The best option for the user with all the useful and relevant info like the nearest located restaurant, its ratings, distance from user location will be displayed on the app. The app will also guide the path towards that restaurant. This application will help reduce the overhead of finding and searching each and everything by the user itself. Besides this functionality, the app will also be a sort of time killing application. On the basis of the user’s interest, the app will give a list of interesting information, photos, blogs, videos etc. The challenges in this project are: • Extraction of information from different applications. • Intelligently processing of the extracted information. • Display on a third app. Android SDK is the tool which we will be using.
