The NUST Institute of Information Technology has been operating an manual registration System for over 2 years and there is need of web based system is realized due to following reasons.
• Academic programme developments, more flexible, more complex and across subject areas.
• Growth in the student population against a diminishing unit of resource.
• Need for the provision of information more quickly and at a detailed level
• Need to improve the accuracy and completeness of the data hold.
After consideration was given to which method of automation was best suited to the institutions needs a set of criteria were agreed that the system would be required to meet following:-
• Easy to use by people with a wide range of technical competence.
• Scaleable from very small numbers to full scale registration of over a thousand students a day.
• Secure and dependent on the Student Record System
The operation of the system mirrored of that used in the manual system in order to maximize the benefits gained. Use of the system meant a far wider involvement in the registration process.
The problems experienced were mainly due to volume pressure, temporary network solutions and with minor problems associated with software issues.
The NIIT has moved to a new web based system in order to meet the demands created by the changing nature of the student and to take advantage of opportunities created by new technology. Students are seen as being more IT literate than several years ago.
A system that can serve as the hub in a student orientated set of processes and put the student in control of their own data is the ultimate aim. This will free more administrative time to look at the quality of data and provide for those who don’t have access to or skills for the new environment.
STUDENT ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM will be the first such system established in NIIT; it would greatly benefit registrar office, students and instructors. The system will provide on-line student and course registration and detailed class information for both students and instructors. It will provide access to course requisites that previously were not available. STUDENT ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM will access student information from the Students Information Data Base (SIDB), course information from the Course Information Data Base (CIDB), and instructor information from the Instructor Information Data Base (IIDB). The principal external interfaces that will be used include a Login screen, a Registrar’s screen, a Student’s screen, and an Instructor’s screen. STUDENT ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM will be a user-friendly interface program. It will be accessible to students during the 24-hour registration appointment periods and during non-prime time. It will be available to instructors 24 hours a day during the semester. Access to the system will be available through computers logged on to the campus Internet or off campus via Internet login. It will be linked to the NIIT computing network.
The main functions involved in the STUDENT ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM are organized depending on the different types of users. The users include instructors, registrar, dean and students. The login process is the same for all users; however, the system will be dependent on different ID’s and PIN’s to fetch different functions. For students, the system will be accessible only for displaying the record and updating their information if any with approval of Administration. For registrar the system will fetch a menu to add, drop, view and edit functions for course, classes, discipline, station, student and faculty, to allow courses selected by the students and to update student records. The system will generate reports for instructors, students, dean and registrar. |
