SUMM-IT-UP: A Content Summary Generator

Abstract

Last year, go-gulf.ae conducted a survey and shared the results in an info-graphic. The title of the info-graphic was “How People Read Content Online”. From 2000-2015, the average attention span of a human being dropped from 12s to 8s, and roughly 55% of websites are viewed for 15s or less. Why is this so? It’s obvious that this is because of the sheer influx of content that we are presented with every day in this modern digital era. Everything from blog posts to news articles to health reports to academic content is readily available online and almost always in your face begging you to click on it and find out what’s new in the respective domain. But the truth of the matter is that not only do people not have time to read through entire articles, they simply do not have the patience for it. Go-gulf.ae reports that only 10-20% of viewers actually reach the bottom of a post while 60% skim through the text. 97% read the title but the title alone is not enough to portray the message/point of the article. Therefore, we aim to provide a service which summarizes any article for you. This service will be provided through our web application known as SUMM-IT-UP. SUMM-IT-UP uses natural language processing (NLP) techniques to give you summarized versions of articles for you to consume in a lesser amount of time. There’s no need for you to skim through and get a rough idea of the article or to read through huge blocks of text. SUMM-IT-UP takes articles as either plain text or in the form of txt/pdf files and generates a summary for you. SUMM-IT-UP has support for both single document summarization and multiple document summarization, making sure that all your needs are covered.
