Abstract:
Pakistan is going through a severe energy crisis from the past few years. Demand supply gap is increasing with an increase in both population and urbanization. Households are using alternative energy sources to meet their energy requirements. The current traditional electrical system need to undergo evolution. A "smart grid" is an electrical grid which includes a variety of operational and energy measures including smart meters, smart appliances, renewable energy resources, and energy efficiency resources. Replacing traditional grids with smart grids will help meet increasing demand, increase reliability and quality of electricity supply, and increase energy efficiency Demand-side management (DSM) is the modification of consumer demand for energy which will allow customers to make more informed decisions about their energy consumption.
This thesis aims at providing a solution to fulfill energy requirements of households through demand side management (DSM) using smart grids. Pakistan has a potential of producing significant amount of electricity with the solar energy. A solution has been proposed to modernize the power grid system and use solar power as an alternative energy source which will help meet energy demand and also cut down wastage of electricity due to UPS charging and discharging.
