Abstract:
MOVE is a device that obtains a 3D scan of an object – and simultaneously captures its movements. The movement coupled with the scan – allows for a detailed, three-dimensional view of the motion of the object in question. Previously, 3D scanners were able to only gather a static 3D view of the scanned object, providing an image of the scanned object at one instant of time – and therefore, not necessarily conveying a comprehensive understanding of said object, especially if one of the crucial functionalities of the object required any kind of movement.
Dynamic 3D scanning is a step up from Static 3D scanning, and opens up entirely new avenues for its implementation and usage. Some of the more interesting applications include: data set collection for Machine Learning and detailed capturing of elusive natural phenomena (e.g. movement of insects). When completed, MOVE will prove to be a crucial tool for industries in allowing them to simulate systems and test out improvements, by significantly cutting down on Equipment and Process trial costs (monetarily and temporally).
