Abstract:
In today’s modern world people have to travel a lot for their day to day activities. They notice different sign boards which are placed alongside the road. These sign boards display the rule or law that has to be followed on that specific road to avoid road accidents. People usually ignore these sign boards and do not follow them due to which they can undergo a fatal accident or can be penalized by the police. A person when driving must concentrate on the road in front of him. Drivers usually blame these sign boards as a cause of distraction for them. During driving a person has to process many things. In addition to that he has to remember the rule delivered by a sign board which has to be followed on that road. This remembering is not easy unless there is a mechanism in which a driver have a continuous visual or audio message which helps him in remembering.
Interactive Roads is an android application which helps driver while driving to avoid above discussed problems. It shows the image of sign board or a road event reported by the users on home screen which contains Google map. When a driver gets near to the physical sign board he is notified that you are going to enter area in which this rule applies or that event has occurred. The driver gets a continuous notification in the way that the image is displayed on his mobile screen until that rule is replaced by any else sign board or road event.
The approach used in making solution of above discussed problem is crowd sourcing. Any user driving on the road when encounters a sign board or a road event reports it and that report is saved online in the database. The report can be made by using speech recognition module or using touch. Only logged in user can report so that it becomes easy to maintain a record that which report is made by which user. Next time when another user pass at that area he gets notification in the form of voice. Our application also provides basic navigation functionalities by providing an interface in the form of Google maps. It is not necessary for a user to get notifications that he must be logged in.
There are many different navigation and driving assistant applications in the market. But the problem which we are trying to solve has not been solved yet. The problem has been discussed in many papers and the main proposed solution is through image processing but till date no such solution appeared in the market as it becomes a difficult problem to solve through image processing. Google maps have a functionality of providing information about turns on the road that here is a right turn, here is left but it like our solution do not cater sign boards.
The application is in working form and all the features proposed in the project proposal have been completed. But still there is a room of improvement. Many new features can be added that can help improve performance of our application and also current modules can be upgraded to more powerful and enhanced modules like speech recognition which can be improved over time by using updated latest Speech recognition APIs.
