dc.description.abstract In recent years, commercial spending on surveillance equipment has been on the rise. The purpose of surveillance is not limited to recording of activity but also the prevention of unfavorable events. The effectiveness of video surveillance strategies has been studied by researchers in computer vision as well as social sciences and humanities. Research and Development in computer vision to automate surveillance and monitoring have been on the rise. The past and contemporary solution for crime prevention and surveillance cannot be effective if human assistance/monitoring plays the primary role in decision making. This project aims to design and develop a video surveillance application for robbery prone commercial institutions like banks and ATMs. The purpose is to automate the system and move human assistance from primary position to secondary or tertiary position. As robbery is a socio-technical problem that primarily revolves around human element therefore, such a system will incorporate findings of not only computer vision but also social sciences and human psychology (criminal psychology and victim behavior). en_US
