Abstract:
There are three main parts of any power system i.e., generation, transmission, and distribution. Enormous losses of power in transmission occur when the power is transmitted at long distances. Therefore, the reduction in the loss of power that occurs in the transmission system is important. The power losses that occur in the transmission lines are due to ohmic line resistance, current leakage due to shunt line capacitance’s shunt losses and reactive losses due to lines inductance. The losses due to ohm line resistance are the same in both AC and DC transmission but there is no loss in power due to inductance or capacitance in the DC transmission system. Therefore, high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission has less power losses. This research consists of the design and analysis of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology. Detailed system design as well as control design of VSC based high voltage direct current (HVDC) system is conducted. In system design, design of AC components which included transformers, AC filters and converter reactors and DC components design which included DC voltage ripple removing capacitors, 3rd harmonic filters and DC smooth reactors is presented along with sending and receiving end AC sources design. In control design, a complete description of the Current Vector Control (CVC) designed controller, used to control active/reactive power and AC/DC voltage, is provided. For performance evaluation, the HVDC system is implemented, and its control is designed on MATLAB Simulink. Finally, performance evaluation is done by applying AC perturbation through three-phase to neutral fault and voltage sag using 3-phase programmable source presented in MATLAB Simulink.
