Abstract:
The term Network Monitoring describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network either on large or low scale for slow or failing components and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms. It is a subset of the functions involved in network management. Network Monitoring as discussed a subset of functions which involves various details in which you can discuss about Network Tomography, Intrusion Detection Systems, Network Traffic Measurement and Route Analytics.
Now to discuss the motive and importance behind implementing this project is that Basically Micronet has got different VPN (Virtual Private Network) sites for their respective customers and need of project comes from the significance of communication between these sites. The BGP routes between these sites and public address space should be consistent and monitored and in case of disruption it should correlate important aspects and should notify NMS.
This project focuses on the implementation of such a Network Management System which will check BGP routes consistency in an AS (Autonomous System). The Salient Features of the project are:
1. For iBGP we would check MPLS VPN VRF (VPN Routing & Forwarding) Tables to verify if the routes to remote destinations exist or not.
2. To help us troubleshoot loss of connectivity between different VPN sites.
3. We can understand the whole network ring by looking at those tables with respective information and then can easily identify how the routers are connected to each other.
4. We can discover the MPLS path and periodically look how the topology is going to change and would be able to discover new topology.
