Abstract:
Currently, many schools in Pakistan are facing a number of problems related to lab facilities and some of them include the following:
Infrastructure
Many schools are missing basic infrastructure facilities related to labs.
Apparatus
The apparatus provided in schools is of poor quality and is also not enough for every student.
Safety Equipment
Schools pay little attention to the safety equipment required during experiments.
Management
Due to these factors and poor management of most schools, students can’t complete their labs in allocated time.
So, the application “LabMented” is for high school students studying science subjects. The application will allow students to construct their own experiments. They can perform experiments within the application giving them an experience of a real experiment.
LabMented offers an innovative approach to conduct high school science practicals enabling them to practice science at their convenience. This software application can be used by students to construct an environment of lab experiments using Augmented Reality (AR). Currently students of matric and intermediate can use “LabMented” to perform all of their science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) experiments as required by the National Curriculum. So, some of the benefits of using this application include following:
1) Comprehensive understanding of lab experiments
2) No safety precautions are needed
3) There’s no need of professional supervisor for elaborating experiments method
4) Students can practice their lab experiments anywhere at any time without any need of laboratory
5) It’s not hazardous as no chemicals are involved in using the application
Our primary competition is the virtual reality lab called “The Grid” located at NED university in Karachi. It is largely used for medical sciences research and teaching architecture. The cost of development for
this lab summed up to be around 15 million rupees.
The difference between our product and theirs is that our product does not require any additional hardware such as VR headsets to practice science experiments. Students only need a smartphone to perform any high school science experiment.
Moving on, our aims for the future is that we can use augmented reality for generating experiments from text books and we can also accommodate university level laboratory experiments.
