Abstract:
Tremor has been a cause of problems for humans since a long time. One such problem is the unintentional handshakes caused by tremor. These handshakes cause the spilling of foods and drinks thus making it impossible for patients to eat comfortably. We intend on developing a smart spoon for patients with tremor handshakes. The spoon will smoothen the process of eating for such patients especially in public gatherings. Smart spoon is an electromechanical system with a removable spoon at the front and an assembly nullifying the tremors at the back. Capable of canceling the unintentional tremor movements in real time, it will be a game changer for anyone having difficulty in performing a simple life task such as eating.
The project is focused on the development of a smart device that will have the capability of cancelling tremor handshakes in real time. The product contains an Inertial Measurement Unit in its housing assembly at the back of a detachable utensil. With the help of gyroscope and accelerometer built into the IMU, involuntary motion is measured and amount of unnecessary displacement is quantified. Compensating mechanism is generated by actuating the motors based on the commands from the microcontroller. This will be an affordable solution for local markets. By this way, people suffering from Parkinson’s tremor can eat properly with dignity. Moreover, it can be employed in surgical robots with slight modification.
