Abstract:
The current work discloses formulation of two different tablets made from charcoal powder
and seed powder of Peganum harmala through the addition of additives. The direct
compression of charcoal powder and seed powder at different punch pressures resulted in no tablet formation due to the low binding capability. Addition of binding agents, gelatin solution (7%) and starch solution (7%) and fillers Tragacanth gum (20 to 27%), Alginic acid (20 to
27%), glucose (11 to 20%) and cellulose (11 to 20 %) at different concentrations and amount resulted in formation of harder tablets especially due to the binding agents forming bridges
between the particles of powder and filler. The best results of charcoal tablets were obtained with 63% charcoal and 27% filler (Alginic acid) with binding solution 7% (10% starch
solution) and 3% lubricating agent (Calcium stearate) having a hardness of 3 N/mm2
, 17 minutes of burning time and calorific value of 9345.77 BTU/lb. The best results of Peganum harmala seed tablets were achieved with 71% seed powder, 20% filler (glucose), binding solution 7% (1.5% gelatin solution) and 1% lubricating agent (magnesium stearate) having a burning time of 22.5 minutes and hardness of 1.88 N/mm2
.
