dc.description.abstract In recent years, 3D scanning has become an important tool for various applications, including virtual reality, Building Information Modeling, and interior design. However, the cost of commercial 3D scanners can be prohibitively high, making them inaccessible to many individuals and small businesses. Additionally, most commercially available 3D scanners are designed for outdoor environments or large objects, making them unsuitable for indoor short-range scanning. This thesis addressed these challenges and contributed by providing an alternative solution for indoor object mapping that is both affordable and effective. This study presented the design and development of a low-cost 3D scanner for mapping indoor short-range objects. The objective of this research is to provide a cost-effective solution for generating point clouds of objects in indoor environments that can be used for a range of applications. The system is designed to be low-cost and easy to assemble, using off-the-shelf components that are readily available. Experimental results demonstrated the capability of the developed 3D scanner in capturing accurate point clouds of indoor objects within a short range. The system can be used to scan a wide range of objects, including furniture, sculptures, and household items, among others. The low-cost nature of the proposed system makes it accessible to a wider range of users, including hobbyists and small businesses. The system's affordability also makes it a suitable tool for educational purposes, enabling students to learn about 3D scanning and modeling without the high costs associated with commercial solutions. en_US
