Abstract:
In United Nations General Assembly session held in New York from 23 to 28th June 1997, under resolution 53/188 and 54/218, implementation of environmental standards was stressed. A ten years program for implementation and follow-ups was also issued. For developing countries like Pakistan wastewater was pointed out as a major pollutant damaging the water resources and adoption of remedial measures was desired.
Honoring the United Nations resolution, Government of Pakistan chalked out a strategy to provide sixty-nine municipal wastewater treatment plants to twenty four major cities of Pakistan. To design these plants expertise software meeting local climatic needs was not available; therefore an effort has been made to develop a system, capable of designing municipal wastewater treatment plants. Computer model named "WWTP Version 1.0" (YasteWater Ireatment Plant), has been developed to assist the designers of municipal wastewater treatment plants.
WWTP Version 1.0 has a capability to design and evaluate the capacity of various unit operations required for municipal wastewater treatment plants. Basic parameters like anticipated flow, quality of influent and required quality of effluent have been provided to the computer. Considering these parameters and a short session of quires complete designs have been generated for each unit operation.
This model comprising fourteen modules has been developed by using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft Access 2002, in Microsoft Windows XP environment.
Structure of developed model has been kept flexible to accommodate the future additions like treatment of Industrial effluents, preparation of cost estimates and establishment of links to equipment libraries available through Internet.
In the last but not least it is recommended that future developments to this basic model may be considered through IESE in coming sessions of Masters degree program.
