ABSTRACT
This study has been taken from geo-environmental point of view in which used tyres have been considered as a facing and a soil reinforcement material in the form of grid at 150mm x 150mm spacing. To determine the resistance of the tyres strips, pullout tests were performed. The apparatus for the pullout test was fabricated locally. Five tyre strips (26mm x 26mm thick) in the grid were pulled out of the test pit, with the help of a motorized jack. The resistance offered by these strips was measured with the help of proving ring. Laboratory tests were carried out on Risalpur soil to determine its properties. After conducting the pullout tests, it was concluded that the used tyre strips can be used as soil reinforcement for low to moderate height slopes i.e. 2 to 4.5 meter high slopes or embankments. it can also be used in the subgrade stabilization of weak soils and for facing works.Tyres can thus be used as an economical alternative to steel as a soil reinforcement improving on its stability.
