Abstract:
In order to remain competitive in an ever-changing environment; an organization has to
be able to continuously adapt to such an environment. In such rapidly changing and continuously
fluctuating situations, only those organizations can survive and excel which are flexible,
adaptive, dynamic, creative and productive. This can be achieved by developing a skilled human
resource having the requisite knowledge, capacity, capability and proficiency required to stay
ahead in the marketplace. To ensure materialization of what has been envisioned, many
organizations are embarking upon to adopt the concept of a “Learning Organization”. Leadership
of such an organization has to be collaborative, inspirational, transformational and motivational;
based on mutual understanding and shared vision. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in
Pakistan are the primary source of; formal higher education and the research in various fields. By
virtue of their innate quality and fundamental ability to collect, collate, access and share
knowledge; the HEIs have the ideal ingredients and extensive opportunities for the application of
Learning Organization principles. Leaders of HEIs lead institutions to ensure that the people they
are training; possess, acquire and hone the requisite leadership skills. Hence the actions and
performance of the leaders have a direct bearing in influencing and encouraging others towards
learning. HEIs produce the leaders, managers and executives who are going to transform their
respective organizations through implementation of learning organization concepts. It is
therefore imperative that it be studied that whether or not these HEIs themselves can be
characterized as learning organizations. The research intends studying specific role of leadership
in HEIs in creating a true learning organizations and in the process improving the performance.
Above in mind this research focuses on the concepts of “learning organization” and the
“transformational leadership”; with an aim to find the effectiveness of transformational
leadership in transformation of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) of Pakistan into learning
organizations
