dc.description.abstract What brought our attention to this project was the significance of impacts of poor water management in Pakistan. As a developing country, Pakistan faces huge issues of sanitation and poor water management. Water is a precious commodity and new techniques need to be adopted to improve the existing water network and develop means for effective checking and maintenance of water resources. Water wastage in sanitation accounts for huge losses in Pakistan. In most cases the losses go undetected and thus keep on mounting. Our research was focused on application of modern technology and its incorporation with the existing water network e.g. WCs, water tanks and reservoirs so that water leakages could be detected immediately and thus be minimized. For the project we used a leakage monitoring sensor and attached it with the interface of a GSM (Global System of Mobile Communications) and a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). The assembly, when fixed on the subject device WC, Water Reservoir etc. measures the change of water level in it. If the water level continues to fall beyond a certain level after a set time limit (If leakage starts to occur), the GSM module sends a text message to a mobile phone notifying of the occurring leakage. The immediate detection allows water to be saved and the problem to be mitigated immediately. The leakage monitoring sensor performed well not only with water but with other liquids as well. Leakage was detected and the notification given to the desired mobile number. We found that water losses that go undetected for long period of times can be eliminated proximately thus saving a lot of water. Steps like these can lead to improved management of existing water resources and help create awareness among the general public about the worth of water as well. Abstract The implementation of this project in large water tanks, storage reservoirs shall be extremely beneficial. Not only will it lead to monitory savings of water but shall also act as a guideline for proper management practices. The world needs to adapt measures like these to maximize the utility of existing natural resources so that it can maintain the current quality of life and that of the future generations as well. en_US
