Livestock and dairy contribute to 12% of the GDP of the county. With 60 million liters of milk per annum, but still, we are unable to capitalize on this industry. Dairy is one of the major local industries of Gujranwala city. In a way it is the identity of the city. But in the current form it has become a nuisance for the city as well, with small dairy farms in the city the cattle has become a hindrance for the urban life, with cows roaming the streets and blocking traffic, does not project the right image of the city.
Considering the increase in demand for dairy and dairy products the proposal is for a vertically integrated1 dairy farm, with different processes related to the production of dairy integrated together in one space. The project also aims to create transparency between the consumer and the producer with visiting activities which will help promote more ethical practices and better hygiene and promote the corporate sector of dairy to produce locally instead of spending billions on imports (consumption of production). This will be a testament to how Architecture can be used to solve real problems and benefit the community.
I’ve visited the existing dairy farm (wairah) 23of the city and their conditions are very unhygienic. A detailed study of the workings of the milk processing and, production of value-added dairy products such as cheese, butter was also done to understand the processes better and to aid in the fusion of these typologies. This will help to allow people to connect with the food they consume and make the process more efficient and economical. The project will also serve as a connection between the two parts of the city (The Urban and The Rural) through physical, visual, and programmatic connections. |
