Abstract:
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have proved to be a promising source of clean
energy as they are affordable and technically and economically feasible on both large
and small scales. By considering the integration of RES with the power system, this
proposed study aims to improve grid stability and power quality by considering a
three-phase grid-tied solar PV system with BESS under the presence of linear and non linear loads. Hence, four cases are analyzed, including solar PV system alone, parallel
operation of battery with PV, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) supplying the
loads alone, and grid-tied operation of the system. The four cases are then further
divided into scenarios including Inverter Control with Grid Current as Reference,
Inverter Control with Load Current as Reference, Shunt Active Power Filter with
Loads, and Hybrid Filter with loads. Furthermore, the Total Harmonic Distortion
(THD) in the grid current is considered in all cases to measure the grade of the
harmonic pollution injected into the grid. The comparison of the study lies between
the values of THD and the effect of each case on the evacuating level of harmonics,
keeping the grid stable. The research emphasizes the effect of variability of solar
irradiance towards power quality arising due to the existence of grid-connected PV
systems. It outlines BESS as one of the possible solutions to mitigate such disparities,
as it results in reduced harmonics, lower pollution levels, and increased power quality.
Hence, the proposed study adds value to shaping optimal systems and control
strategies for efficient operations that ensure integrated sustainability and access to
clean energy under United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7.
