This study examines the impact of crisis events, particularly flood disasters, on interpersonal
communication and social support networks within the communities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,
Pakistan. Through the lens of Uncertainty Management Theory (UMT), the research explores
how individuals navigate the complexities of crisis situations, focusing on the dynamics of
personal relationships and mental health during times of adversity. T he study employs a
qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured in-depth interviews to gather insights
from 10 individuals who experienced the 2022 and 2023 floods. Key themes identified include
the evolution of communication methods during crises, the challenges faced in maintaining
effective communication, the pivotal role of family and community support systems, and the
profound emotional and psychological impact of such events. The findings highlight significant
gaps in existing crisis communication strategies and underscore the need for improved
preparedness, especially concerning mental health support. This research contributes to the
broader understanding of crisis communication by offering valuable insights into the resilience
of interpersonal relationships and the critical importance of social support networks in
mitigating the effects of natural disasters. |
