dc.description.abstract This thesis investigates the portrayal of socio-cultural elements in 21st century Pakistani cinema, focusing on a socio-semiotic analysis of the films Joyland (2022) and Zindagi Tamasha (2019). The study aims to understand how contemporary Pakistani films utilize visual techniques to convey and reinforce cultural narratives and societal norms. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach within a social semiotic framework, this research delves into the visual and narrative structures of these films to assess their representation of socio-cultural issues. The findings reveal that these films serve not only as reflections of current societal challenges but also as critical commentaries on existing social norms, underscoring the significance of cinema as a medium for cultural discourse. This study contributes to the academic discourse by providing a deeper understanding of how 21st century Pakistani cinema engages with and influences the socio-cultural landscape, offering valuable insights into the role of film in shaping and reflecting cultural identity. en_US
