Climate change is considered to have catastrophic effects on planet Earth, and has direct
impact on agricultural productivity. It has become a huge concern for developing countries,
such as Pakistan, where agriculture accounts for around 24% of GDP and employs more
than 40% of the labor force. Additionally, Crop productivity is declining as a result of
climatic changes, causing food insecurity. This study is based on district-level statistics for
three key Pakistani crops, wheat, rice, and sugarcane, which comprised Food and Cash
crops spanning 2003 to 2022. The study focused on six agriculturally intensive districts in
Punjab that are prone to climate conditions. This thesis examines the influence of climate
change on Pakistan's agricultural production and food security. It also investigates the
impact of climate change on food security and makes policy suggestions for both mitigation
and adaptation. This study uses the economics of strong sustainability and the Global
Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition (GSF) to assess the effects of climate
change on agricultural productivity and the per capita food supply of the three essential
crops. As the future climate conditions are expected to harm the crops production, Potential
adaption strategies have also been suggested, emphasizing the significance of reframing
policies to meet this social and economic issue. |
