Abstract:
Understanding the damage and failure behavior of annealed and chemically strengthened glass (CSG) is important to make informed decisions in choosing the suitable
glass for different applications based on their needs and outcomes. There performance needs to be assessed under different loading conditions to quantify their behavior for specific applications. The presented study is aimed to model the failure
and damage behavior of monolithic and laminated glass under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. Both annealed and CS glass and their distinct combinations of laminate were modelled under the three point bending and Electromagnetic
Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (ESHP B) test maintaining the identical loading and
support interfaces. The Finite Element Method (FEM) coupled with Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (F EM − SP H) numerical scheme along with Johnson-Holmquist
ceramic material model (JH-2) is utilized to model the complex behavior of glass,
because the conventional FEM failed to address the issues related to large deformations and fragmentation of brittle materials. In the first phase, FEM-SPH numerical frame work was established and validated against the experimental results for
monolithic annealed and CS glass, and annealed glass laminate under quasi-static
and dynamic loading conditions in LS-Dyna. The same method was then extended
to distinct combinations of annealed and CS glass laminates under quasi-static and
XII
dynamic loading conditions. The numerical framework achieved an acceptable level
of accuracy in predicting the damage, failure, stiffness and fragmentation of glass.
The study provides an insight to better understand the behavior of the annealed and
CS glass and their distinct laminates to make informed choices in choosing different
glass for different applications. Moreover, it provides an efficient and reliable numerical framework as an alternative to costly experimental tests.
