Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) pose significant threats to communities residing in mountainous regions, due to the accelerated melting of glaciers caused by climate change. Coping with these disasters in an effective manner requires thorough awareness and rigorous training. This project explores the dynamics of GLOFs, focusing on the innovative use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology for disaster risk reduction and creation of a digital twin to be used as the foundational model for mitigation solutions. The study area is the Shisper region, which is characterized by the dynamic movement of the Shisper Glacier. The major objective of the study was preparing a prototype for VR based training modules based on the digital twin of the Shisper GLOF event which occurred on May 7th, 2022. Blender software was used to simulate water flow in the Shisper region, employing fluid objects, terrain interaction, and domain constraints to recreate the effects of GLOFs. By proposing the development of a Digital Twin and VR-based training modules of the vulnerable region, the project aims to enhance community preparedness and response capabilities. The VR simulations created in Unity offer immersive and interactive training experiences, providing stakeholders with a deeper understanding of GLOF hazards and possible mitigation strategies. Additionally, the concept of GLOFs in VR can be expanded to include a larger audience, encompassing the likes of planners, researchers, disaster management experts, and be used as a tool to provide educational information for awareness among global communities. |
