Abstract:
In an era marked by the relentless demand for enhanced networking solutions, this research
delves into the realm of Software Defined Optical Networks (SDON). Harnessing
the transformative power of Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles, the study
explores the fusion of SDN with optical networks to revolutionize network management
and orchestration. The research motivation stems from the growing need for faster,
more efficient, and flexible networking infrastructures to support bandwidth-intensive
applications and emerging technologies. Through a comprehensive analysis of SDON
principles, the study presents the design and development of a pioneering application,
the Open Networking Engine (ONE). This open-source, vendor-agnostic Network Management
System (NMS) offers centralized control and monitoring capabilities for Open
Optical Line System (OOLS). Leveraging state-of-the-art experimental testbeds, including
point-to-point OOLS and SDN testbeds, the research evaluates the performance
of SDN controllers and validates the efficacy of the ONE application. The experimental
setup encompasses a diverse range of networking scenarios, allowing for rigorous
assessment and optimization of network performance metrics. The research outcomes
include the establishment of a robust experimental framework and the development of
innovative solutions for Software Defined Optical Networks (SDON) management. By
bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation, this research
contributes to the advancement of SDON technology, paving the way for more
efficient, adaptable, and responsive networking infrastructures.
