Abstract:
The development of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) exemplifies the
evolution of concrete technology, improving the concrete strength, flexibility, crack
resistance, and ductility while minimizing its self-weight. Its unique properties and
effective utilization in bridge infrastructures, high-rise buildings, marine structures,
energy-efficient buildings, and sustainable structures, especially in seismic-prone
regions, have made it a cutting-edge material. The innovative idea of the
development of the Green Engineering Cementitious Composite (GECC)
incorporating Marble Dust (MD) and Coal Bottom Ash (CBA) arises from the
environmental challenges caused by cement production in the industry in the form
of CO2 emissions, and the disposal of MD and CBA (waste materials) which are
nothing more than a burden as landfill and challenge to the waste management. This
research study comprehends these environmental challenges as an opportunity for
innovation and proposes the development of GECC that not only provides a
sustainable and environment-friendly outlet for the effective utilization of MD and
CBA but also significantly minimizes the environmental impact associated with
conventional cement production by minimizing its utilization. Sixteen different mixdesign proportions incorporated varying percentages of MD and CBA were cast.
Mechanical tests including compressive strength test, splitting tensile test, flexural
strength test, and modulus of elasticity were conducted to determine the effect of
MD and CBA in the ECC. Based upon the obtained results, the optimum
compressive strength and modulus of elasticity were determined by the mix-design
proportion,15CBA + 05MD, incorporating 15% CBA and 05% MD. While optimum
splitting tensile strength was determined by the mix-design proportion 10CBA +
10MD, incorporating 10% CBA and 10% MD, and optimum flexural strength was
determined by the mix-design proportion 05CBA + 05MD, incorporating 05% CBA
and 05% MD.
