Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of evaluation techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. These tests are used in construction industry to assess the quality of building materials.
PUNDIT is a non-destructive standard test method for pulse velocity through concrete. This method can be used to measure dynamic elastic modulus, assess the uniformity and relative quality of concrete, to indicate the presence of voids and cracks, to estimate the depth of cracks, and to evaluate the effectiveness of crack repairs. PUNDIT determines voids, cracks, honeycombing and delamination in concrete, ceramics and other building materials. It can also be used for the assessment of extent of damage caused by fire and frost. It is also used for the detection and assessment of corrosion in RCC concrete.
With the modification and up gradation of this equipment, its applications can be enhanced to much useful and broader spectrum and at the same time provides a user friendly GUI.
The equipment do not have user friendly interface and uses an analog interface to estimate the quality of materials. PUNDIT also has limited use and is only calibrated for concrete materials. The technique used in the equipment can be extended and application of the equipment can be enhanced and extended to other materials.
It can be used by various organizations like MES to determine the quality of building materials like PCC, RCC, wood and brick masonry without causing any damage to the structure. It can prove to be relatively cheap, easy to operate and time saving. |
