Abstract:
A study leads to map the slums of Islamabad with the specific objectives to (a) create accurate inventory of slum buildings in the study area using Object Oriented Analysis (OOA); (b) calculate Roof Area per Person (RApP) and (c) conduct field survey for the collection of number of inhabitants and their socioeconomic status. GeoEye-1 imagery with 0.5m spatial resolution was used with the OOA technique for the identification and mapping of the slums using Trimble's eCognition Developer 8.7. Besides this questionnaire based field survey was conducted and 507 GPS points alongwith socioeconomic data were taken. The model RAM (roof area model) for population estimation was used to calculate the RAPP. Population had positive strong correlation with income (r = 0.74). On other hand income had positive significant correlation with available facilities (eg. electricity r-0.23, natural gas-0.07) and negatively correlated with literacy level(r=-0.01). The study results were mapped and geo-database of the slums of the study area including their socioeconomic attributes was developed. Spatial statistical analysis, point pattern analysks as well as modeling of relationship were also performed to validate the study results. A 78% accuracy was achieved of roof area extracted through OOA classification at the rate of 95% building extraction rate. The proposed methodology could be extended to other city slums. This study can help decision makers for defining policies against illegal slums in the cities for betterment and development of country.
