REINVENTING PUBLIC LIBRARY THROUGH INNOVATION

Abstract

This thesis aims at redefining public library in Jinnah Park as recreational space for people to adopt contemporary ways of learning and social interaction for purpose of learning. People will be provided with an opportunity to enjoy reading and learning by devising innovative programs for the learning center and exploring their relationship with architecture and its overall spatial experience, thus treating architecture as a holistic experience so that the concept of learning and educative spaces becomes the next big idea and prospect of an intellectual modern-day society. This public library in Pakistan will appear with a new perspective towards informal learning and learning thus breaking all the previous preconceived notions about a public library, so this will instigate the use and importance of a library in a society. Thus this library will establish itself as a prototype for future libraries in Pakistan. This thesis also focuses on breaking the predetermined concepts of a public library among the general public by researching and elaborating three things that are site, programs and architectonics. The new public library is designed according to innovative learning mediums to create exciting, amusing and energetic learning spaces, which also instigates social interaction which is the most popular informal learning medium of today's world. These innovative mediums mostlyused LED and digital screens to translate the books into visual imagery and thematic displays of books in order to regenerate the passion of books and reading in people. Thus this library incorporates those learning and information mediums to which people of 21 century respond to. So all in all this public library is not just a container of information but itself is information and knowledge for people of Pakistan.
