dc.description.abstract The reality of architecture is the predominance of introverted and static forms, which limit the use of spaces to a single program. The building does not respond to changing needs and requirements of its program and users, thus making the spaces rigid, and render the user as a passive participant rather than actively engaging it. Also architecture is losing its social integrity and gives more importance to exchange over user value. This way it ignores its social and aesthetic qualities which then lead to the creation of spaces that are increasingly scripted and homogeneous. Therefore the architecture needs to perform to the various needs of its users and programs. It must facilitate social integrity and allow for a multi- functional design that can accommodate various programs in the same space by allowing the spaces to adapt to different requirements over time. The aim of the thesis is to explore the role of architectonics in the creation of multi- sensory experiences within architecture. It involves looking at the multiple roles the building can play, by casting architecture as spatial action rather than as a static form. It will challenge the conventional use of architectonics in a performing arts centre, and seek how spaces can be designed that allow for flexibility and spatial adaptability by accommodating multiple programs, and events in a space. It seeks to achieve spaces that allow for an active participant of its users and seeks to create extroverted and immersive environments that allow for various opportunities for user engagement and social interaction. The site selected for the project is F-9 Park, Islamabad. Due to its central location, accessibility and its role as an existing public space it has the potential of becoming a social node- bringing people of various cultures and backgrounds to come and interact. Performing arts, along with its complimentary programs is used as a tool to bring people together and allow them to actively engage and socially integrate. en_US
