Abstract:
Life for the daily wage laborers in Pakistan is anything but a fairytale.
Hard toil with little reward on some days, and endless search for work during
others highlights their struggle to earn for their families. Most of them are not
even locals of the capital city Islamabad. The fraternity includes people from
all over the country including painters, masons, construction workers, welders
and others with different professions. They migrate to the capital city in hopes
for better job opportunities and a better income to take home.
Every day, starting from six in the morning they start their quest to find work
by sitting on pavements or roadsides and waiting for someone to hire them.
They do not have any designated location to gather and showcase their skills,
hence they just sit on the roadsides or wherever they think they will be visible
to potential employers. For the daily wage laborers the struggle is not only to
find a job but also to carry the heavy tools required to get the job done. The
goal of the project is to find solutions that can help them carry their gear
during their search for work.
