Abstract:
Pakistan is one of the most overpopulated countries in the world. On average
each family household comprises of 6-7 family members. The size of that
particular household is not standardized which means that there are whole
families that are living in one portion which has maximum of two bedrooms
two baths, a living room and a kitchen. This situation is often categorized as
overcrowded situation because more than two people usually end up sharing a
room. This causes quite a problem for the children especially because each kid
needs a space to work, play and sleep. Human being has five basic senses which
include sight, hear, touch, smell and taste. Every person is constantly sensing
these five things. In an environment which is too compact and crowded, a child's
senses are constantly stimulated and thus, he or she has hard time focusing on
studies or sleep or even play. This has a drastic effect on their lives at the later
stages. The purpose of this particular project is to understand the routines of
children who share a room with their siblings and understanding the importance
of their current lives, how they live and intervening in a way that's least
disruptive and yet helps them have their own personal space.
The future of houses all around the world in co-operates smaller houses with
smart furniture design that can assist in compact space allocation and help people
make their houses more organized. Although there are number of solutions on
compact designs very less work has been done on enhancing the experience
of living in these houses keeping in mind not only the space problem but other
problems that go hand in hand with it. This is especially true when we talk about
houses in Pakistan which not only too small for an average sized family but also
lack basic necessities such as enough sunlight penetration that usually is hindered
due to very close houses and narrow streets. This along with the problem of
space can cause clinical depression amongst the residents of the house. Thus,
when we talk about enhancing the living experience of children we also talk about
these secondary problems that have a direct impact on children's lives.
