Abstract:
Floods are a common phenomenon in Pakistan especially in river bed areas. They
hit almost every year. Pakistan is one of the most disaster prone countries in the
world. The natural hazard threatens to affect lives and lifestyles of its people.
People living in riverbed areas are more exposed to these floods which on
exceeding normal flooding level, take dangerous turns.
These people, who are most floods affected, own a land in riverbed so they can't
shift somewhere else. It's their only source of earning. When faced with flood
every year, these people contact rescue teams which in return waste their
resources in rescuing people and shifting them to safe places where they should
have shifted themselves beforehand. There has always been a need to minimize
the impact of the flood in order to ensure long-term survival of communities
living near rivers and mainstreams. The goal of the project is to design a solution
to enable them to relocate and provide temporary shelter at the time of the flood
in order to reduce their dependency on external help.
