Abstract:
With so many digital distractions these days, low productivity is an issue that a lot of young
people face today. This study aims to investigate the causes, effects, and looks towards a solution
to the productivity crisis in the working class of this generation. While there are many distraction
management applications already available digitally, but the issue remains, that when the
smartphone is in close proximity to the user the user will get distracted, thereby lowering
productivity & attention span. This paper we will investigate the effect smartphones have on user
productivity by studying the need hierarchy with regards to the smartphone thereby minimizing
the unnecessary use of the mobile phone during working hours. The solution that this study
works towards uses a system revolving around Pomodoro; a productivity management system,
this showed a significant improvement in user productivity which was indicated by task
completion within our target user group. These results add weight to the hypothesis that when the
mobile phone is in close contact with the user, productivity decreases & this is where the
Pomodoro pod increases user productivity while creating a productivity monitoring system that
can be scaled onto the scope of an entire organization.
