Architecture, directly or indirectly defines the existence of human beings and vice versa. It has
the ability to manipulate and give emotions to its users. Hence, architecture holds in itself the
ability to heal and impact on the wellbeing of the users.
After spending your whole life with dedication and devotion, it is not fair if it starts to feel like a
burden in the end. The aim of this architectural thesis project is to design a wellness and
community center for the elderly, bringing communal spaces in juxtaposition with old age
homes. Research shows that the elderly population often faces social isolation, mental and
physical health problems, and abandonment issues, among others. This project proposes to
address these issues by creating a shared space where people of different age groups can come
together and interact with each other.
This report includes various case studies, interviews and surveys of related user groups which
indicate that satisfaction or the feeling that life is worth living, may be achieved by participating
in activities, accepting and sharing one's experiences and leaving a legacy for the future
generation. So the elderly should get a space where they could get a chance to socialize and
rebuild their sense of community.
The center will be designed to act as a hub for community activities, events and programmes
bringing different user groups together and catering to the social isolation and ageism faced by
the users. The design will include recreational spots for the elderly, outdoor gardens, workshops,
exhibitions, arts and crafts center, shops, cafes, and sports facilities promoting the social
inclusion, community engagement and well being of individuals. Users will be kept in a relaxing
environment, having private and public zones for themselves and visitors. The complex will
provide a healthy living environment for its users, making them feel wanted and a part of the
society.
The thesis project aims to cater to the idea of rebuilding the sense of community of the elderly on
micro and macro levels through architecture. The project will explore the potential for
architecture to heal and impact the well-being of its users. |
