The main concept of the thesis revolves around the exploration of the circulation typology in
a mix used ensemble. In the present urban scenario where cities are expanding at an
exponential rate, the demand for innovative and complex architectural designs has
increased immensely. Such complex designs, are required to be capable of weaving together
and blending both the programmatic complexity of the design with its experiential
complexity.
The act of mixing different programs is not new in the field of architectural design; rather, it
is a well explored technique, with examples all round us that we are familiar and well
acquainted with. Unfortunately, this technique has been exploited in our urban scenarios so
much so, that the resulting designs have lost their character; they are capable of fulfilling
their programmatic purpose but on the other hand are completely void of any sort of
experiential character. Thus, the cities need a new programmatically challenging
architectural design that is not just programmatically rich but also tends to exploit
architectural typologies that can give rise to an experiential architecture.
Circulation formulates the back bone of any architectural design. It binds and connects all of
the spaces that a built form requires. The overall pattern that circulation forms, determines
how the user will interact, experience and perceive the overall spatial arrangement. Thus
exploring circulation as a typology in a mix used ensemble will result in the designing of a
well-integrated unique architecture that will not only fulfill its functional requirements but
iv
will also result in maneuvering the user inside and outside the design in a manner that, it
overall forms an experientially rich ensemble. |
