Abstract:
Current trends in power electronics applications is towards high power density and highly efficient converters meeting the same or reduced cost as already available in the market. By increasing the switching frequency, size of high power density converters ,containing the bulkiest parts such as transformers and inductors, can be significantly reduced. In this regard, planar magnetics are considered as an effective approach compared to the conventional wire wound transformers .In modern switch mode power supplies (SMPS) and converters ,increasing switching frequency results in high parasitics and effects i.e. Skin and proximity effects, leakage inductance, unbalanced magnetic flux distribution etc. Therefore, this thesis provides an insight towards the problems related to the high frequency magnetics and proposes a solution with regards to different aspects in relation to designing high power density, high frequency and energy efficient Planar Transformers. Core based and coreless planar transformers has been analyzed and discussed. Upon the discussion, it is deduced the most suitable situations for both the technologies.
