Abstract:
A wireless sensor network, or a ‘WSN’, is composed of distributed independent sensor
devices to supervise the surroundings, such as temperature, sound, vibration, motion etc,
and to collaboratively pass their collected data to the end user through a gateway node
which is responsible for the sole purpose to act as the bridge between the senor network
and the base station. Generally, military setups and other security sensitive areas require
tight security cordons to be established around them to prevent any intruder to enter their
prohibited premises. A deterministic distribution of sensors is, therefore, required to
create a virtual boundary around a highly sensitive institution. A Wireless Sensor
Network strategically collects data from various locations of the area of installment,
making use of specialized proximity sensors that consume less power and cover a wider
range of motion detection.
We have designed a security surveillance and reporting system which is based on several
homogeneous sensors that are deployed around the concerned area to provide sufficient
geographical coverage to help ensure the best possible security over a particularly larger
tract. A Security Monitoring Software is designed to provide a serially communicating
channel between the WSN and the central computer system. This software will also
provide automatic E-mail and SMS facilities to caution the concerned personnel to take
appropriate action, thus making it a complete surveillance and reporting system. Another
application is designed for continuous video monitoring of the area in the vicinity of each
sensor, and it is linked with the base station application software via Local Area Network
(LAN) connection. This software application controls camera switching in case of motion
detection from multiple sensors at the same time, thus providing a complete video
monitoring facility over the WSN
