dc.description.abstract Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is a point-to-multipoint fiber to the access network architecture with all passive optical components. Ethernet Passive Optical Networks are considered to be an effective solution for broadband Access Networks. Flexibility, performance and cost effectiveness of EPON-based access networks significantly depends on efficient bandwidth allocation. The two main types of Passive Optical Network are TDM-PON and WDM-PON. TDM-PON is single-channeled solution which has one wavelength for downstream data and one for upstream data. Downstream is broadcast. In upstream a single wavelength needs to be time-slotted between contending ONUs. This creates Access bottle-neck. Few proposals have been published to solve the access bottle-neck that support service level agreement (SLA) based Quality of service (QoS) and class of service (CoS). This project focuses on the development of dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm which is an improvement of existing ‘Enhanced of Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation algorithm with Fairness (EFDBA) proposed by Byungjoo Park .et al.’ by improving the utilization of available bandwidth and reducing the residual queue length that is carried forward to the next transmission cycle. Also part of this work is implementing the service level agreement between the service provider and users to ensure better services to the customers according to their demands. A novel idea based on ratio counting (RCDBA – Ratio-Counter Based Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation) is introduced in this work which significantly reduces the residual queue length and still ensures that lightly loaded ONUs do not face starvation. en_US
