EXTENSION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ZENOSS NMS FOR SEECS NETWORK

Abstract

Monitoring of the IT infrastructure of an organization is very necessary and important to know machine’s status or to check which device is working properly. If there is any issue, we need to track that issue so that remedial steps can be taken properly and effectively. Several open-source tools exist which provide these functionalities. Zenoss is one of the top and most widely used NMS (Network Monitoring System). There was a need to enhance and extend the functionality of Zenoss so as to fulfill the needs of the data center. The method of extending Zenoss is to write Zenpacks (plug-in). We have written Zenpacks to extend the functionality of Zenoss. Those Zenpacks can be easily distributed and deployed on other machine using the same NMS. One major Zenpack that data center severely needed was to see the states of the Switch ports whether they are up/down. Our Zenpack not only gives details of each port but also shows graphically the port’s status. We also integrated Zenoss with several other tools and software. We provided sms gateway integration and SSH support on Zenoss which was not previously available. The integration of Network map, monitoring of Stulz Air Conditioner and development of Zenpack for MGE UPS were also part of this project.
