Abstract:
Majority of the people in Pakistan live in the countryside areas, with only one-third of the country's population currently are in cities. The rapid growth in the population coupled with urbanization in search of better livelihood has aggravated the traffic problems in cities of Pakistan. Islamabad has no exception. Islamabad being a capital of Pakistan has a lot of opportunities for livelihood. So, people from different cities of Pakistan of rural and urban locality are traveling towards Islamabad in search of better livelihood with increasing percentage every year. Islamabad has experienced a phenomenal increase in traffic congestion, mismanagement in past few decades. The congestion is more and more intolerable during the peak hours. Most of the rural people are taxi drivers. Since majority of them are illiterate so they cannot use the traffic rules properly and might cause a severe accidents. Authorities are feeling an uphill task to manage ill-discipline, impatient and non-responsive drivers with meager traffic controls and nominal funding. Hundreds of people in the cities of Pakistan are killed in road accidents because of lack of the road safety considerations at design stage and monitoring after completion. This road safety analysis based project is being undertaken to study the road safety issues at Golra Roundabout Islamabad, to identify the major road safety deficiencies in the geometry and areas of risk and suggest the remedial measures to reduce the road accidents at Golra Roundabout.
